Consultant, International Federation for Human Rights; Former Spokesperson, Violations Documentation Center in Syria
Bassam al-Ahmad is a Syrian human rights defender and co-founder and executive director of Syrians for Truth and Justice. He is also a consultant with the International Federation of Human Rights. He began working for the Violations Documenting Center in Syria (VDC) in 2012, serving as its spokesperson and its director of research and reports for just over four years. He was arrested in Damascus in February 2012 when the VDC office was stormed by Syrian Air Forces intelligence.
al-Ahmad graduated from Damascus University, where he studied Arabic literature and started working in the field of human rights. He was also a Leaders for Democracy Fellow at the Maxwell School. He is now focused on issues facing the Kurdish minority in Syria.
